World of Tanks: Generals

World of Tanks: Generals

No one was more surprised than me when I heard that a card game based on World of Tanks was being added to the Wargaming line-up. World of Tanks Generals is a free-to-play, browser-based Collectible Card Game focused on tank combat (with in-game purchases to support the ‘free’ part, obviously). I was lucky enough to get hold of a Closed Beta key, and I’m going to tell you what I think about WoTG, but before we begin I should tell you I’m no great CCG fan and I’m pretty hard to please. Not only does the game have to be enjoyable, but the setting has to be right too [...]

Homefront, better than you thought it was..

Homefront, better than you thought it was..

When we were suggesting games for our list of Most anticipated Games of 2015 I threw Homefront 2 into the mix. Two days later, when the laughter had died down and they finally realised I wasn’t trolling, they wanted to know why. ‘It’s simple’, I told them. ‘Because the original Homefront is one of the best FPSs I’ve ever played!’ (But with a hell of a lot of caveats!). Now before I go on, I’m not talking about the single player campaign, which was the worst kind of linear shit imaginable. The protagonist can fly a helicopter and operate any number of guns and explosives, but can’t open a [...]

Interview with the Devs: STRAFE

Interview with the Devs: STRAFE

Right now on Kickstarter there are some pretty bold claims being made, Pixel Titans are saying that their project is “The future of video games: the fastest, bloodiest, deadliest, most adjective-abusing, action-packed first-person shooter of 1996.” That’s quite a bold claim when you consider it’s putting itself firmly inside the invisible crosshair of genre defining Doom. Hearing this we had to get in contact and ask them could a 3D Doom/ Quake inspired FPS cut it nineteen years later? So, STRAFE, what’s it all about? STRAFE is the FPS that ruins lives with its breathtaking realism.  The type of game your friend down the [...]

Interview with the Devs: That Dragon, Cancer

Interview with the Devs: That Dragon, Cancer

It’s not too often that you find a game ‘Based on a true story’. Games, even more so than films and TV (where the trope thrives) are perfect vehicles for total fantasy. But That Dragon, Cancer is very much based on a heartbreaking true story; that of Ryan and Amy Green’s experience raising their son Joel, who at just 12 months was diagnosed with terminal cancer and not given long to live. Despite that, Joel lived a further four years, until March 2014. So it’s an adventure game, but it also serves as a living painting, a poem, an interactive retelling of the Greens’ journey. Players relive memories, share heartaches, [...]

Early Access Review: Stranded Deep (or, ‘Game of Rocks’)

Early Access Review: Stranded Deep (or, ‘Game of Rocks’)

Note that while this game is still in Early Access and is not representative of the finished product, since I’m being charged for this I think it’s fair enough if I point and laugh at it a bit. So, yet another survival game, but this time there aren’t any zombies, cannibals or zombie cannibals. Instead, your enemy is mother nature herself, time and – at this point in the game’s life – monotony. Search for food, water and building materials, but most of all search for rocks. Lots, and lots, of rocks. First things first, though. Beam Team Games’ Stranded Deep is jaw-droppingly beautiful. From the [...]

Review: Metro 2033

Review: Metro 2033

Aeons ago in gaming terms (well, 2010) there was a game we dubbed ‘The PC Crippler’ – a game so future-proof that it can stand toe to toe with many of the big-budget games released this year. That game, my friends is, Metro 2033 (obviously, since it’s named in the title). Last year, with surprisingly little fanfare, it was given a new hair cut and a fresh pair of pants with a ‘Redux’ version. Building on already-impressive visuals, Metro 2033 Redux  improves on the original in just about every way, with superior graphics and even new gameplay mechanics, transplanted from it’s sequel, Metro Last Light. Metro 2033 is a survival-horror shooter based on the [...]

The Seven Years War Another Grand Strategy hoping to eat up more of your time, The Seven Years War is still waiting to be greenlit on Steam, and looks not too dissimilar to Empire: Total War, (and if it can even come close to what I would say is the best Total War Creative Assembly has to offer, [...]

Interview with the Devs: Verdun

Interview with the Devs: Verdun

Verdun is a squad-based multiplayer FPS set during the First World War. The game was inspired by the infamous Battle of Verdun in 1916, and includes historically accurate features. These include authentic WW1 weaponry, historical maps based on sectors of the Western Front, and authentic uniforms and equipment. The game immerses you audiovisually into one of the bloodiest conflicts ever fought in Europe. It’s been in Early Access for a while now, but is set for a full release soon (TBA). We talked to them a while ago, so we thought we’d catch up with the devs and talk game engines, community feedback [...]
