Pillars of Eternity (original working title Project Eternity) is an upcoming fantasy role-playing video game from Obsidian Entertainment for Microsoft Windows, OS X and Linux at least partially funded through Kickstarter. Involved in production are Chris Avellone, Tim Cain, Adam Brennecke and Josh Sawyer (check out the exclusive XP4T interview with Josh here).
It is notable for its crowd funding campaign, which raised $3,986,929, at the time the highest funded crowd sourced video game on Kickstarter. Together with the amount funded through PayPal, its final value rose to $4,163,208. (wow).
Obsidian Entertainment is well-known throughout the gaming community for incredible titles such as the epic Baldur’s Gate and the award winning Fallout series. While gaming industry writers and story-makers are busy squabbling over the definition of art and whether games fits it, debating the idea of games as concrete and valuable storytelling mediums, Obsidian has just got on with doing it. Pillars of Eternity promises to be the same kind of epic, isometric, party-based, gripping M-rated game as any of their previous titles.
According to the devs, “Project Eternity will take the central hero, memorable companions and the epic exploration of Baldur’s Gate, add in the fun, intense combat and dungeon diving of Icewind Dale, and tie it all together with the emotional writing and mature thematic exploration of Planescape: Torment.” Wow. Just wow. Once you’ve recovered from that idea, check out our interview with the devs here!
Pillars of Eternity is slated for an ‘early 2015’ release, so stay tuned!
