Interview with the Devs: Chris Avellone

Interview with the Devs: Chris Avellone

As the Creative Director of Obsidian Entertainment, Chris Avellone is one of the most well known and respected writers in the games industry, responsible for such classic CRPGs as Planescape: Torment, Knights of the Old Republic 2, Fallout: New Vegas, and Alpha Protocol. We were honored when he agreed to answer some questions for us, but how to make the most of this opportunity? Why not enlist another games writer to interrogate interview Mr. Avellone from the perspective of a colleague? We reached out to Jonas Wæver, Creative Director of the small Danish indie game studio Logic Artists, who wrote the [...]

Interview with the Devs: Verdun

Interview with the Devs: Verdun

Verdun is a squad-based multiplayer FPS set during the First World War. The game was inspired by the infamous Battle of Verdun in 1916, and includes historically accurate features. These include authentic WW1 weaponry, historical maps based on sectors of the Western Front, and authentic uniforms and equipment. The game immerses you audiovisually into one of the bloodiest conflicts ever fought in Europe. It’s been in Early Access for a while now, but is set for a full release soon (TBA). We talked to them a while ago, so we thought we’d catch up with the devs and talk game engines, community feedback [...]

Interview with the devs: Camelot Unchained

Interview with the devs: Camelot Unchained

Camelot Unchained  is an upcoming subscription-based, RvR-focused MMORPG being developed by City State Entertainment. We wrote about it a few weeks ago here. We had the chance to touch base with the creator, Mark Jacobs who was kind enough to answer a few of our questions. XP4T: What´s the latest on Camelot Unchained? Mark: The latest is that we have just passed the $3M mark in crowd-funded backing! While this pales in comparison to Star Citizen, it still places Camelot Unchained™ in the upper echelon of CF-backed games. Besides that, we just knocked 28 items off of our current to-do list and are getting close [...]

Interview with the devs: Thimbleweed Park

Interview with the devs: Thimbleweed Park

In case you’ve been living under a rock for the last week or so, you’ll have missed the incredibly exciting news about Thimbleweed Park – a point and click adventure game currently under development with Kickstarter funding. The game  is a curious story about two washed-up detectives called in to investigate a dead body found in the river just outside of town.  Switching between five playable characters, you  uncover the dark, satirical and bizarre world of Thimbleweed Park. The Kickstarter was a great success – the team has already surpassed their initial goal and are busy working on their stretch goals – largely because Thimbleweed Park comes from [...]

Interview with the devs: Kingdom Come: Deliverance

Interview with the devs: Kingdom Come: Deliverance

Kingdom Come: Deliverance is an upcoming first-person, open world, realistic RPG  set in the 15th century medieval Bohemia with a focus on historically accurate and realistic content. Initially Warhorse Studios was looking for £300,000  on Kickstarter, but surpassed it with over 35k supporters with a whopping £1,106,371. The game  will feature period-accurate armor and clothing, combat techniques, and real-world castles recreated with the assistance of architects and historians. We sat down with Jiří Rýdl, Head of Communication from Warhorse Studios, and he answered a few of our questions. XP4T: How did you come up with the idea of making an open-world RPG set in medieval [...]

Interview with the devs: RESIST (Arma 3)

Interview with the devs: RESIST (Arma 3)

We PC gamers are extremely lucky people. Lucky to be PC gamers, and lucky to have frequent opportunities to produce mods for the games that we love to play. If you’re a true fan of a game, the best thing you can do is transform your affection into new content for other, like-minded individuals to play and enjoy. This requires some skill, determination, good work planning and often luck. But the best modding creations can match or sometimes even surpass those of the original game’s. This is exactly what I felt like back in June when I played Road’s End for [...]

Interview with the devs: Hide & Shriek Mansion

Interview with the devs: Hide & Shriek Mansion

Hide and Shriek Mansion is an ambitious point and click adventure game currently under development. We had the opportunity to sit down with the lead developer Stephen Espion, and he shared his thoughts and ideas of the development of the game with us. XP4T: What’s your background? Do you have experience developing games? Stephen: I’ve not had any direct experience developing – my involvement in the games industry started in QA testing and localization management, which then led to cinematics, motion capture and trailer production, but I’ve been learning Unity for a few years now, and have a team who are [...]

Monday’s Mod: After TNM

Monday’s Mod: After TNM

The Nameless Mod (TNM) which was released in 2009, was a gigantic single player mod for the original Deus Ex game from 2000. It featured a completely new setting, over 59 new levels and even custom sounds and weapons. The mod was named Editor’s choice from ModDB as the Best Singleplayer Mod of 2009, (disclaimer: this author was one of the many volunteers on The Nameless Mod project) Jonas Waever was the Lead Designer/Project Director on TNM, and we had the opportunity to sit down and talk shop, and find out “Is there life after modding?” XP4T: How did you [...]

Interview with the devs: Jotun

Interview with the devs: Jotun

Here at XP4T we’re always keen on interviewing game developers, asking them about their inspirations and plans, their relations with their fans and – most importantly – their games. This time we discuss the upcoming Jotun with its creator, Will Dubé. At its core, Jotun is a well-designed arcade game in which you play Thora, “a Norse warrior who has died an inglorious death and must face the challenges of Viking purgatory to prove herself to the Gods and enter Valhalla“. And what more challenging enemy could you imagine than an enormous jotun (giant) of Norse mythology? Kickstarter and Steam Greenlight users seem to [...]

Interview with the devs: Zpocalypse Survival

Interview with the devs: Zpocalypse Survival

Zpocalypse: Mixing combat, gathering, advancement and team strategy in a roguelite, RTS survival game set in a randomized post-apocalyptic world. The original Zpocalypse board game was borne of a frustration by Jeff Garcia at the lack of zombie board games that were, to him, interesting and engrossing. After building a team and launching a successful Kickstarter for the board game and all of its assets last year, planning for the Zpocalypse video game began. It has already been Greenlit by the Steam community, and just needs financial help to push it into a final product. With a goal of $35,000, Greenbrier is offering tier rewards from [...]
