Review: Metro 2033

Review: Metro 2033

Aeons ago in gaming terms (well, 2010) there was a game we dubbed ‘The PC Crippler’ – a game so future-proof that it can stand toe to toe with many of the big-budget games released this year. That game, my friends is, Metro 2033 (obviously, since it’s named in the title). Last year, with surprisingly little fanfare, it was given a new hair cut and a fresh pair of pants with a ‘Redux’ version. Building on already-impressive visuals, Metro 2033 Redux  improves on the original in just about every way, with superior graphics and even new gameplay mechanics, transplanted from it’s sequel, Metro Last Light. Metro 2033 is a survival-horror shooter based on the [...]

Trauma in the Desert: How One Mod Defined an Entire Series (Part 2)

Trauma in the Desert: How One Mod Defined an Entire Series (Part 2)

We’re on a mission, people, a mission to discover how one mod changed the entire face of a AAA gaming franchise. If you missed last week’s briefing, get yourself up to speed here, then lock and load for Part 2 below… In a nutshell, one Swedish development team, Refraction Games, made the legendary online WWII shooter, Codename Eagle (1999). Refraction were then acquired by another Swedish outfit, Digital Illusions CE (DICE), and together they would give the world Battlefield 1942, back in 2002. BF 1942 proved itself both highly popular and highly moddable, and it’s as the Battlefield modding craze [...]

Beautifully Stupid: The Story of Saints Row and Volition (Part 3)

Beautifully Stupid: The Story of Saints Row and Volition (Part 3)

In Part 2 of our look at the history of Saints Row/Red Faction developer DeepSilver Volition, we covered the period from the first Saints Row game in 2006, to the beginning of development of the third Saints Row in late 2008. But the Third Street Saints weren’t the only ones getting a sequel… R.I.P. THQ Meanwhile, Volition Producer Jim Boone was leading the charge on Red Faction: Armageddon. An April 2011 GameSpot preview of RF:A tells us that the move away from its predecessor’s open world design to a more traditional, linear shooter, was the result of player feedback. (Apparently, [...]

Beautifully Stupid: The Story of Saints Row and Volition (Part 2)

Beautifully Stupid: The Story of Saints Row and Volition (Part 2)

Hello again XP4Ts, and welcome back to our look at the history of the developer of GTA V‘s closest competition, Deep Silver Volition. (Part 1 is here). This week is something of a long middle section, so grab yourself a fresh cup and make yourself comfortable… Before we press on with the events of 2006 and the first Saints Row’s release, we need to address the elephant in the room. Yes, that friendly pachyderm, eavesdropping happily on our conversation about open-world, sandbox crime games is, of course, Rockstar’s (née DMA Design’s) Grand Theft Auto. The GTA games had been a [...]

Beautifully Stupid: The Story of Saints Row and Volition (Part 1)

Beautifully Stupid: The Story of Saints Row and Volition (Part 1)

Greetings, XP4Ts. In a few months’ time, just as we’re loosening our belts and massaging our kidneys after the annual festive drink-’em-up, the monstrous Scottish beast known as GTA V will (hopefully) be arriving on our beloved PCs, in all its so-much-better-than-the-console-version glory. According to the already gigantic Wikipedia entry for this 50 Gb+ monster, that particular day of reckoning will be the 27th of January. I think we can assume that most of us who intend to get it are already clearing the space in our diaries, if not also on our hard drives. But did you know that [...]
